Cutting-edge methane leak detector offers enhanced precision, safety, and compliance in gas pipeline surveys

19 Aug, 2025

INFICON’s IRwin® Methane Leak Detector has been designed and developed to assist end-users in meeting the dual challenge of environmental compliance and operational safety in natural gas distribution applications. Built for gas utilities, safety inspectors, and specialist contractors, IRwin merges highly advanced infrared sensing with an integrated gas chromatograph (GC) to provide pinpoint detection and accurate source identification, even in complex and harsh environments.

The system delivers measurement from 1 ppm up to 100 Vol.% methane and 1–100% LEL, supporting a wide range of applications including above-ground surveys and bar-hole testing. Multiple detection modes, including a Universal Mode, enable operators to adapt quickly to changing survey conditions.

An infrared sensor (patent pending) provides rapid response and recovery times while reducing false positives. Crucially, the integrated GC enables operators to distinguish between natural gas and swamp gas even at low ethane concentrations, ensuring compliance with recognised standards such as DVGW G 465-4.

The IRwin SX series is fully Ex-certified for Zone 0 / Class I Div 1 hazardous environments, meeting both ATEX and US safety standards. Its rugged design and ergonomic probe kit are designed with field usability in mind, helping survey teams work efficiently without sacrificing accuracy or safety.

With methane’s high global warming potential, rapid detection and accurate source verification are critical for utilities and contractors aiming to lower fugitive emissions, prevent safety incidents, and meet environmental regulations. The IRwin Methane Leak Detector provides a field-proven, portable solution to achieve these objectives.
