New OEM laser package simplifies gas analyser integration

Bringing a gas analyser from prototype to series production requires repeatable assembly, reliable optical alignment and effective thermal management. The new nanoplus OEM package for DFB interband cascade lasers addresses these integration requirements for manufacturers developing instruments based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS).

The laser is electrically connected via a connector, removing the need to solder individual TO pins. This simplifies assembly and reduces the risk of handling errors. An onboard memory chip stores the laser’s operating parameters.

The package mounts directly onto a customer-supplied heatsink using two M2.5 screws. This provides a defined mechanical interface and supports efficient thermal coupling, a flat PCB layout and compact instrument design. An integrated large thermoelectric cooler (TEC) provides cooling capacity, while an NTC sensor enables precise temperature control. Heat is transferred through the bottom of the base plate to the external heatsink.

The beam exits from the side of the housing, providing access for mounting a collimation lens within the instrument. A wedged, anti-reflection-coated window minimises back reflections that can affect measurement quality. Collimation is carried out as part of system integration.

The package geometry is designed for consistent assembly at volume. Its electrical, thermal and optical interfaces help engineering and production teams define how the laser will be installed, connected and aligned within the finished analyser.

The DFB interband cascade lasers provide single-mode emission at customer-specified wavelengths between 3,000 and 5,000nm. This range includes strong absorption bands of gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde, supporting environmental and emissions monitoring. Their low power consumption also makes them suitable for portable and battery-operated instruments.
