Weather monitoring
R.M. Young Company (Young), a manufacturer of meteorological instruments since 1964, is excited to announce they have acquired Texas Electronics (TE), manufacturer of tipping bucket rain gauges and meteorological sensors since 1956. The acquisition expands Young’s precipitation offerings alongside their pre-existing wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, visibility, and snow depth instruments.
Precipitation data supports decision-making across a range of applications, including stormwater management, hydrology, agriculture, research and public safety. As these applications have different measurement requirements, the expanded tipping bucket rain gauge range offers customers greater choice and flexibility. Available options include collector sizes of 4-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch, 200 mm and 245 mm, as well as siphon versions designed to maintain accuracy during extremely heavy rainfall. Customers can also choose between English and metric calibrations, while an optional heater accessory makes the gauges suitable for sites that experience snow and freezing rain.
These gauges complement Young’s existing 52202 and 52203 tipping bucket rain gauges rather than replacing them.
The two companies share more than a product category. Both are mid-sized manufacturers with more than 60 years in business. Both build their instruments in-house. Both design them to be maintained and repaired in the field. Both have the same passion for accurate environmental measurement. And both serve the same professional community of meteorologists, researchers, engineers, and public agencies.
"For 70 years, Texas Electronics has been built on two groups of people: the ones who make our gauges and the customers who count on them, some of whom have been recording rainfall with our instruments for decades," said Jim Sutherland, CEO of TE.
"Finding the right company to carry that forward mattered more than anything else in this process. R.M. Young builds instruments the way we always have, in-house and made to be repaired rather than replaced, and they treat customers as long-term partners. I know our customers are in good hands."
"When a team has collected rainfall data at the same site for 20 years, they need to know their gauge, and the people behind it, will still be there for the next 20," said Eric Mannix, President of R.M. Young Company. "That continuity is what R.M. Young has been built on since 1964, and what Texas Electronics has given its customers since 1956. We made this decision to support our customers better. Being easy to do business with means giving them more choice in precipitation measurement and fewer vendors to manage, with one partner who cares about their data as much as they do."
Sutherland will remain with TE to support customers and operations through the transition.
Ordering remains the same for TE customers. For TE customers, the acquisition opens access to the full Young product line. Customers building or maintaining complete weather stations can now source globally trusted wind, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, visibility, and snow depth instruments from the same company that supports their rain gauges.
