St Albans' problems with poor
air quality look set to continue, according to the latest reports.
The local council has failed to find a solution to the problem of poor
air quality in the city centre caused by car exhaust fumes, the St Albans and Harpenden Review reported.
An
air quality management area was set up in 2004 around the Peahen crossings area, but this was extended in July as the level of nitrogen oxide in the air was found to be above the safe levels of 40 microgrammes per cubic metre of air.
Plans are being set out by the county council to reduce the amount of traffic that passes through the centre, after the body admitted that the 25-point plan it had drawn up would do little to improve the air.
Clean air targets are being met in some areas, however, with the government announcing earlier this month that it will reach its goals for reducing the level of C02 produced by occupied buildings.
