Changes to the Congestion Charge in London could help the capital improve its air quality.

It has been revealed that the Greener Vehicle Discount will be introduced on cars that release less than 100g/km of carbon dioxide and have achieved a Euro 5 rating for air quality.

This will exempt owners of certain vehicles from paying 100 per cent of the charge fee and has been launched to encourage drivers to purchase more environmentally-friendly cars.

Managing director for Mercedes-Benz Cars UK Gary Savage suggested that his company's smart cars are equipped for driving in the city due to their low carbon emission levels.

"This development recognises the importance that smart places on lowering emissions," he stated, adding that he is "delighted" at the total exemption from the Congestion Charge for users of the vehicle.

One month ago, the mayor of London Boris Johnson announced that the Western Extension of the Congestion Charge zone will be removed from December 24th 2010. The Greener Vehicle Discount will come into action from January 4th 2011.
