Lancashire is to set up more
air monitoring devices in order to cut down on pollution levels.
The Lancashire Telegraph has reported that Pendle Council will take action to improve its
air quality after tests revealed there are high levels of nitrogen dioxide in the area, which exceed government standards.
Today (April 1st 2011), Pendle is to become an Air Quality Management Area in an attempt to reduce its high concentration of pollutants.
Public health manager for the local authority Richard Walsh told the newspaper: "We continually monitor nitrogen dioxide levels at this location."
He added that despite the poor air quality, "I want to reassure residents that the air in this part of Colne is safe to breathe and they need not be concerned".
Pendle Council has been carrying out air monitoring procedures in Colne since 2009 and states that road traffic in the area is one of the main causes of pollutants in the atmosphere.
