A second volcano eruption in Iceland looks set to have a damaging effect on UK air quality, as an ash cloud begins to drift over from the Scandinavian country.

The Grimsvotn volcano has started to spill lava and ash, with experts predicting the residue will make its way towards the north of Scotland by tomorrow (Tuesday May 24th 2011).

Particles engulfed the Icelandic capital Reykjavik last night and the city's airport was forced to close.

Airlines across the UK have been warned to prepare for possible disruptions, although experts have said a repeat of last year's chaos - when European airspace was closed for six days - is unlikely.

However, Europe's air traffic control organisation has claimed the ash could drift as far as Spain in the coming days.

"If volcanic emissions continue with same intensity, cloud might reach west French airspace and north Spain on Thursday May 26th," a statement read.

Ryanair has today released its financial figures for the year leading up to March 31st 2011 and despite posting an increase in profits, the firm cited last year's ash cloud as having a detrimental impact on business.
