Targets set by the British government relating to emissions reduction within the aviation industry are challenging, according to one industry expert.
Cait Weston, deputy director of the Aviation Environment Federation (AEF), said that the sector will find it difficult to stabilise its emissions levels whilst complying with Westminster's aim of growing the industry.
"The government's plans for aviation expansion across the UK are not compatible with the targets for climate change," she commented.
However, Ms Weston noted that the targets set for the air transport industry were generous compared with substantial cuts expected across the rest of the economy.
A report released by the Committee on Climate Change on December 8th stated that companies operating in this area need to focus on improving fuel efficiency and developing alternative ways to power aircraft.
It also recommended investment in other modes of transport, such as high-speed rail links to Europe, to help cut air passenger numbers and reduce the need for short-haul flights.
