IMO Regulation D-2 requires that strict ballast water quality standards are adhered to at the point of discharge. Historically this has relied heavily on labour intensive, subjective microscopy. The FlowCAM continuous imaging cell analyser offers automated high speed analysis of ballast water samples for indicative monitoring in support of the IMO Regulation.

Data can be used as a rapid method for measuring total particle concentration and/or an image based approach to determining treatment efficiency. It’s VisualSpreadsheet software provides automatic counting and identification of different particle types. Several application notes are available covering this application. Available as either a bench top or portable system the FlowCAM is available through Meritics Ltd (UK).
