With Neon pR the first instrument of the brand new single channel measuring instrument series Neon, from Dr. A. Kuntze (Germany), goes on sale. Neon is a modular measuring and control instrument. The entry-level version contains the measurement, one digital input and an alarm relay. It can be upgraded via add-on codes.

Neon pR can be used for pH and ORP measurement. It works with standard pH electrodes and pH-difference electrodes. The temperature compensation of the pH value is automatic or manual. The user determines the reference temperature. For the temperature measurement a Pt100 or a Pt1000 can be used. In case of using a Pt100 with two-wire connection a shift of the measuring values is possible due to the cable resistance. It is possible to connect the temperature sensor with a three-core connection with Neon. So the impact of the cable resistance will be compensated.

If the water temperature is constant there is no need for a temperature measurement. In this case the user enters the temperature value manually for the temperature compensation.

Selecting the functions is the first step to fit the Neon to an application. Neon is available with keys or with a touch screen. A serial interface RS 485 with Modbus RTU and up to two analogue outputs are available for direct data output. As two control functions are available: a concentration based PID controller, and volume-based dosing. Data storage – a necessity in many applications – is possible with the add-on Datalog. This stores all measuring values of Neon on an internal SD card. Upgrades can be easily implemented into already installed Neons via the SD-card function – without PC connection.

With the SD card function and the configuration program of the company Dr. A. Kuntze, it is possible to make settings at the desk, save it on an SD card and transfer it to the instrument. Additionally it is possible to store the settings of one instrument and transfer them to other instruments.

When implementing a new instrument in a control system, transmission problems can occur, due to faulty wiring and connection. With Neon it is possible to simulate all outputs in the test menu and so to check the wiring of the system and the reaction of the control center.

Saving energy is also possible with Neon. The energy consumption is reduced by switching off the background illumination in the eco mode. This has the added advantage that it increases the life expectancy of the display.

In many applications the pH value is an important quality criteria, and it is often used for chemical dosing. Therefore it is important to secure the instrument against unauthorised access. Neon provides two user codes that allow access to defined levels. With auto lock the code is reset to 0000 after a defined interval without operation.

In case of an event which impairs the measurement or the signal output, a message appears on the desktop. In the control system, events can be registered via the alarm relay. Additionally all events - related to a failure in measurement – are given out by the analogue outputs with activated 22 mA alarm.

For all active event messages the help menu provides advice on the problem at hand and how to fix them.

With Neon instruments, the user can adjust the desktop design to show functions that are important in his application and so to have an eye on his favorite information.

Neon contains a lot of support functions for maintenance.

The Hold function allows maintenance work without setting off the alarm. A predictive maintenance is possible based on a list of the last 10 calibration results. The guided two-point calibration makes calibration easy, even with older sensors.

In case of a problem, a diagnosis file can be saved on the SD card to get an overview of the situation. It shows all settings, the event log, the current measuring values and data information in the Kuntze Konfigurator on a PC.
