Water/wastewater
Sectional measurements, or measurements within DMA zones, represent a major challenge for water utilities, as pipeline access is often limited and suitable manholes are frequently absent in the field. As a result, monitoring flow, pressure, and temperature under real conditions is difficult or even impossible. To address this, AquaLink has developed an IoT insertable flow meter that, with its patented hybrid technology, enables compact installation and precise measurement even where conventional solutions fail. The device can be supplied either as a standalone unit for existing manholes or as a complete set with a small prefabricated shaft, ready for quick and easy installation in the field.
Designed for use in plastic, metal, or concrete pipes from DN 80 to DN 500, the sensor can be installed under pressure without interrupting water supply. Installation requires only minimal space (160 mm) and is typically completed in less than four hours. A coupling is mounted directly on the pipeline via hot tapping, with a DN 400 pipe casing used to form an accessible manhole. Even at depths of more than 2.5 metres, the sensor remains fully serviceable with a dedicated tool, while the shaft is sealed with a road cap for secure access.
Once installed, the AQ IoT Flow Meter provides bidirectional measurement of flow, pressure, and temperature. Its design incorporates a propeller monitored by a precision electronic circuit, enabling every rotation and position to be recorded in real time. This ensures excellent accuracy even at very low flows, with a minimum detection threshold of 0.019 m/s. Each device undergoes seven-point calibration on an accredited measuring line (SIST EN 17020), achieving measurement accuracy better than ±3% under recommended installation conditions.
Its robust construction ensures reliable performance even in pipelines containing a high percentage of solids. Serviceability and durability were central to its design: the unit can be recalibrated or repaired, with an expected service life of up to 10 years depending on water quality. Paired with the AQ IoT Logger, the system operates on long-life batteries, delivers continuous data, and enables the detection of silent leaks or bursts – capabilities beyond those of conventional MID or ultrasonic systems.
