American retail giant Wal-Mart said it is on track to end landfill waste by 2025, despite falling behind on other environmental goals.

Supermarket chain Wal-Mart has put environmental sustainability at the top of its priorities, which is why waste efforts have been pushed up in order to avoid landfill completely. The chain targets 2025 as being the year it will stop sending waste to landfill, which would require further reductions on waste that they currently send their, which stood at 20 per cent at the end of 2011.

However, the company has managed to reduce its waste significantly in the past two years. In 2009, it sent 36 per cent of its waste to landfills, which marks a significant reduction based on the 20 per cent it now sends.

The company did fall behind on other environmental objectives, which was recognised by their CEO Mike Duke. He said: "Understandably, in some areas our progress is slower than we would like, and sometimes we hit temporary roadblocks."

These roadblocks are in areas such as energy-efficient consumer products sales, electricity use and the level of phosphates in its laundry and dish detergents.
