East Asia expands cooperative POPs monitoring with greater focus on PFAS analysis

Japan and its regional partners are strengthening long-term environmental monitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), with new emphasis on analytical capacity and harmonised monitoring methods for PFAS across East Asia.

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment announced the outcomes of the 16th Workshop on Environmental Monitoring of Persistent Organic Pollutants in East Asian Countries, which brought together government representatives from ten countries alongside experts from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Stockholm Convention Secretariat.

Discussions centred on using coordinated monitoring data to evaluate the effectiveness of the Stockholm Convention, while also improving analytical capability for emerging contaminants.

Among the technical priorities agreed during the meeting were wider adoption of GC/MS techniques for PFAS analysis, continued harmonisation of POPs monitoring methods between participating countries, and further development of analytical training programmes.

The workshop also confirmed that cooperative monitoring supported by Japan will continue in Malaysia during 2026 and Indonesia during 2027.

Participants agreed to maintain long-term 'supersite' monitoring at Cape Hedo in Japan and Jeju Island in South Korea to provide consistent background measurements unaffected by local pollution sources.

For environmental laboratories and monitoring agencies, the programme reflects the growing importance of comparable analytical data across national boundaries.

As regulators place increasing emphasis on long-term trend analysis for PFAS and other persistent contaminants, harmonised sampling protocols, laboratory quality assurance and shared analytical methods are becoming as important as the monitoring networks themselves.
