A United Nations (UN) panel is set to conduct
environmental analysis on three greenhouse gas reducing projects.
According to Point Carbon News, a UN spokeswoman has confirmed that the Shandong Dongyuen, Zhejiang Dongyang and China Fluoro schemes will be scrutinised by experts.
Together, the three projects, which have been approved under the Kyoto Protocol, are thought to destroy a potent gas called hydrofluorocarbon-23.
However, green groups have raised their concern over the initiatives, saying it was part of a ploy to increase carbon emissions so that the projects could destroy them and countries could accumulate more Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs).
The spokesperson said: "There has been a request for review of the request for issuance."
Uncertainty over the success of the Kyoto Protocol has been felt for a while after a recent article in the New Scientist stated that analysing the results of the pact would be an "impossible task".
It added that the reports the members submit come with "big uncertainties" as they are never exact results.
