Retail giant Tesco is close to achieving its zero
landfill waste targets, it has been revealed.
According to Business Green, Tesco will make the announcement today, after recently confirming that 800 more of its stores no longer send their waste to
landfill sites.
Around 1,700 of its stores do not use landfills, meaning the retailer is "on track to divert 95 per cent of the waste it produces from
landfill by the end of 2010".
The goals were established in Tesco's Corporate Responsibility Report, which states that the company has more than 3,500 waste and recycling initiatives in place at present.
Commenting on Tesco's commitment to the environment, chief executive Terry Leahy said: "I fundamentally believe that business has a crucial role to play in tackling climate change, setting an example and guiding consumers towards more sustainable forms of consumption."
In related news, Tesco recently set itself a target of selling ten million energy saving light bulbs in the next year.
