Public support is vital if governments are to make the right decisions regarding
environmental legislation according to the Campaign Against Climate Change.
Speaking at the International Day of Climate Action, a spokesperson for the group urged people to show their support for initiatives such as the UK government's climate change policy.
Abi Edgar said: "World leaders have all said that people need to get out to show that there's a public will for these measures to be taken."
The campaign group acknowledged that decisions relating to
environmental legislation are not easy.
Ms Edgar added: "We need to make it easy for them to make those decisions, because it's what we want and we have to show them [that]."
The International Day of Climate Action saw over 5,000 rallies take place across the world on Saturday October 24th 2009.
Events focused on the number 350, which represents 350 parts per million (ppm). Many scientists around the world now widely believe this to be the safe upper-limit of carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere.
The Campaign Against Climate Change is calling on the government to take radical steps to reduce the UK's CO2 emissions, including a blanket ban on domestic flights and an end to agrofuel use.
Campaigners are hoping to encourage the government to be proactive in its fight against climate change ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference due to take place in December this year.
