The government's Green Deal - which is aimed at helping homeowners improve their energy efficiency in order to satisfy EU
environmental legislation - must target the poorest people in the UK.
Bosses at Consumer Focus have urged the government to tailor the project in order to encompass those who need to make savings on their utility bills the most.
Under the scheme, which will launch in 2012, households can secure loans to pay for energy saving measures such as loft and cavity wall insulation.
It is one of the government's major hopes of reaching their future emission reduction targets, but Consumer Focus has queried the fairness of the system.
"One of the biggest concerns that must be addressed is making sure the poorest households living in the coldest homes are reached by energy efficiency help," commented the organisation's energy expert Liz Laine.
Yesterday (May 10th 2011), the Federation of Master Builders revealed that a YouGov poll showed 59 per cent of the general public believed that not enough is being done to improve energy efficiency in UK homes.
