Nuclear power sites are profitable but not sustainable, it has been claimed.

Speaking earlier this week, Angela Gallacher, a spokesperson for The Renewable Energy Centre, said nuclear power plants take a long time to get up and running, with it often taking more than ten years to get to the point of commissioning.

"If we take our lead from the French, who have been investing in nuclear energy for many years, nuclear power can be a reliable source of energy for the UK.

"It is not entirely green, nor is it entirely stable, but it is an alternative to fossil fuels and does provide the UK with some security for the future," she explained.

Ms Gallacher pointed out that the UK has enough wind power to provide energy for the country several times over and said that if the government is seriously committed to harbouring wind power it could get projects up and running faster and more effectively.

Ms Gallacher's comments come after EDF Energy announced that it is in the process of selling one of its nuclear power sites.
