Food waste generated at the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival is to be converted into compost, it has been revealed.
According to the Press and Journal, the initiative is part of the Green Dream Machine project, which aims to cut the amount of food waste being sent to
landfill sites.
A dedicated compost corner will be created for caterers and festival-goers to deposit their waste.
Belladrum production manager Lesley Strang said the festival will be the first in Scotland to pilot food composting.
"We have also received support from Scottish-based company Vegware who are supplying our caterers with compostable plates and cutlery and by offering them a discount this makes it cheaper than using conventional plastics," she added.
The festival commences on August 7th and features acts including Editors and Ocean Colour Scene.
In related news, the government recently awarded grants to several British companies to create energy from organic matter.
Speaking at the time, environment secretary Hilary Benn said 100 million tonnes of food and other organic waste is generated every year that could be used to create enough heat and energy to run over two million homes.
