A landfill site which could be needed to deal with West Sussex waste will be subject to regular monitoring from the Environment Agency, it has been reported.

Waste management company Cory Environment, which applied for the landfill to dispose of 200,000 tonnes of rubbish each year, is reassuring local residents concerned about possible smells that the site will be frequently checked by environmental officials, according to the West Sussex County Times.

Alistair Holl, director of resource management at the firm, which collects waste and cleans streets for over 720,000 people and thousands of businesses across the UK, said that two of the three existing landfills in West Sussex will be full by 2013 and all of them will be filled by 2018.

"Even with the targeted increases in recycling rates and the emergence of other planned recycling facilities, by 2025 there will be a shortfall in West Sussex's required landfill capacity of over five million tonnes," he said.
