A landfill site in Northamptonshire could soon begin accepting radioactive waste.

Disposal specialist Augean, which owns the East Northants Resource Management Facility, said the radioactive waste would be of a low level and of an insignificant risk to the public.

Speaking to the Evening Telegraph, Dr Gene Wilson, technical director at Augean, said: "Government policy and national strategy has identified this need and we all have a responsibility to help positively address our national legacy from the power enjoyed from the UK's former nuclear sites."

A public exhibition will take place at King's Cliffe Memorial Hall on May 21st from 11am until 8pm.

Andy Mercer, a representative of the East Northamptonshire Council, said there are a number of questions which need to be raised, such as whether or not the material will be biological or inorganic waste.

Established in 2004, Augean is the UK's leading hazardous waste specialist and operates a landfill and treatment division.
