The utilistaion of landfill sites in the UK this year will cost households an average of £30, according to the Local Government Association (LGA).

As the tax for waste dumped in landfill sites is set to increase to £40 per tonne for local authorities this month, the LGA has recommended that taxes for landfill use should be used to invest in better recycling methods in the future.

The increase in taxes for local authorities will be a significant strain upon them, according to the LGA.

"This money just goes into the general exchequer and the government [is] loath to give it back to councils," stated chairman of the LGA environment board Paul Bettison.

Earlier this week, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced that it will invest £319 million to improving waste facilities in the south of England.
