The Environmental Protection Department in Hong Kong has revealed that it successfully made 20 prosecutions under its anti-pollution laws in January.
According to the country's official news agency, seven of these convictions were for waste disposal incidents, while six organisations were fined for causing air pollution.
There were also four cases related to noise pollution and three concerning causing damage to
water quality.
One company received a fine of HK$50,000 (£4,179) - the biggest financial penalty handed out in the first month of the year - for importing waste without a permit.
Hong Kong's legislation relating to the import and export of waste for disposal operates under a permit system, which follows guidance set out in the Basel Convention.
In addition to a general provision relating to dumping waste, which prevents rubbish being left on public land or government property, there is also specific legislation to cover chemical and livestock waste.
