UK secretary of state for the environment Hilary Benn is to call for greater
environmental analysis and protection today (October 27th) as he delivers the annual Darwin Lecture.
In a speech at the Natural History Museum in London, he is due to address the fact that climate change, human development, biodiversity loss and food supplies are all strongly connected.
Mr Benn will say that at the present time, the world is not successfully protecting its biodiversity and that the current state of affairs is not sustainable.
He is due to call on the international community to set new targets for improving biodiversity and the establishment of a new global structure to protect the marine environment, as well as preventing overfishing.
"We will have to take into account in the decisions we make, the value of biodiversity and ecosystems and recognise the true costs we incur when we damage or degrade our natural resources," Mr Benn, who is the Labour MP for Leeds Central, will conclude.
