People have been encouraged to give their loved ones green gifts by someone who regularly makes changes to the UK's
environmental legislation.
Earlier this week, secretary of state for the environment Caroline Spelman welcomed the new trend for 'virtual' presents that benefit nature.
These include sponsoring animals, supporting wildlife charities or giving money to help preserve an area of natural beauty.
Ms Spelman said: "These imaginative gift ideas show just some of the wonderful ways that charities are working to care for our finest landscapes and most endangered wildlife."
She added that these presents will also allow partners, friends and family to "play their part in safeguarding our natural heritage".
Co-editor of Ethical Consumer Magazine Dan Welch also gave his
environmental analysis on how people can make greener choices over the festive period, suggesting that they could buy energy-efficient goods or give organic cotton clothing for presents.
