There needs to be a change in environmental legislation in order to prevent more disastrous typhoons from occurring, it has been suggested.

An article on EnvironmentalGraffiti.com has highlighted the need for more urgency to be given to climate change policies in order to reduce the number of natural disasters from happening.

Writing about Typhoon Ketsana, which occurred in the Philippines in October 2009, the article said: "Ketsana was teaching man already that Mother Nature has had enough."

According to Nasa official reports, the cyclone dropped 17.9 inches of rain in the capital Manila in just one day.

The article reiterated the necessity to take steps now to prevent climate change and advised governments to stop cutting down trees as they "provide shelter" and "absorb water".

Most importantly, the report asked for a change in attitude, adding that "climate change is real" and "should be acted upon".

The comments were made after Hurricane Alex caused destruction across Mexico and the southern states of the US earlier this month.
