People living in London have improved the city's record on tackling climate change, according to new research.

The report published by the Environment Agency revealed that the amount of municipal waste sent to landfill from the British capital has dropped, as the rate of recycling and composting has increased.

In 2008, London sent 6.6 million tonnes of waste to landfill of the 22 million tonnes it generated during the 12 months.

According to the organisation, efforts to cut the amount of water wasted through leaks have been successful, but it stressed that more steps need to be taken to further improve the situation.

Data shows that average daily water consumption per person in the capital is 161 litres, compared with 149 litres for the rest of England and Wales.

However, Clive Coley, Environment Agency regional strategy manager, explained that the city is heading in the right direction.

"Forward planning and collective action will ensure the demands [placed] on London's resources are managed in a way that allows future generations to benefit," he stated.
