There is a growing body of evidence that the pace of climate change is speeding up, environmental observers have claimed.
Chris Walker, a proponent for the Campaign against Climate Change, stated that the world is facing a "climate emergency" because the rate of environmental alteration is happening faster than predicted.
"The science can vary because climate is a very complex dynamic and climate change is a very complicated system. Evidence is mounting that climate change is occurring far more quickly than was originally thought," he explained.
With world leaders meeting in Copenhagen this week to hammer out a global agreement on carbon emissions targets, among other issues, Mr Walker urged politicians involved in the talks to take immediate action.
He added that science has reached a wide consensus regarding climate change, but said that there are still many unknown quantities when it comes to definite timescales.
Research released by the University of Bristol earlier this month revealed that the earth may be between 30 and 50 per cent more sensitive to levels of atmospheric CO2 than previously estimated.
