Environment project launched to 'improve green transport'

Europe is set to develop its green transport technologies with the launch of a three-year project.

Yesterday (June 9th), ecoMove announced details of its new initiative, funded by the European Commission, which aims to reduce CO2 levels by up to 20 per cent.

Coordinator of the eCoMove project Jean Carles Pandazis said: "In reality today, vehicles, drivers and traffic management systems fall short of this ideal, and much fuel is wasted leading to unnecessary CO2 emission."

According to eCoMove, road transport accounts for 70 per cent of transport greenhouse gas emissions and 20 per cent of global emissions.

The intentions of the project are to offer eco-driving support with green routing and planning advice, produce fuel-optimised routes using specialised navigation systems and reduce the amount of petrol used with a traffic management device.

Earlier this week, mayor of London Boris Johnson announced a new transport Greenways scheme, which intends to make the capital greener by introducing more footpaths and bicycle routes around the city.
