The environment Agency has submitted a revised planning application for the Shaldon and Ringmore tidal defence scheme.
After taking into account improved tide level data, the height of the £8.5 million defences will be lowered.
The organisation said it has taken into account the concerns raised by the public and landowners over the original application.
Gordon Trapmore, Environment Agency flood risk manager for Devon and Cornwall, said effective tidal defences could still be provided with a lower wall.
"Other than being lower, the scheme is largely unchanged from the previous proposal and we hope it will be more acceptable to the local community," he added.
The public will now have the opportunity to view the revised proposals though the usual planning process.
In related news, Nottingham's new £51 million Left Bank Flood Risk Alleviation Scheme is due to be officially launched later this week.
