The Environment Agency (EA) has issued a Pollution Prevention and Control permit to Veolia ES Recovery Nottinghamshire for the company's proposed incinerator.
The incinerator will use heat energy from burned waste to generate electricity, with the permit setting out strict guidelines to ensure that public health is protected.
Greg Broughton, environmental manager for the EA, said the organisation has considered the application carefully and is confident that the proposed incinerator does not pose a threat.
"Before we came to a decision, we considered all aspects of the application very carefully including the comments we received from members of the public and other organisations such as the Primary Care Trust and Health Protection Agency," he added.
Meanwhile, a
wastewater facility in Indiana has undergone renovation work to enable it to convert fats, oils and grease into energy.
The food will be provided by Purdue University and is expected to cut the plant's running costs.
