Councillors in Belfast have rejected plans to build a new £300 million incinerator in the north of the city.
According to the Belfast Telegraph, local representatives were asked to decide whether to allow the facility to be constructed on a North Foreshore site, near to the M2 motorway.
The high-tech facility would have been used to convert the city's waste into energy and, despite a positive response to the consultation process, two-thirds of councillors voted against the plans at a meeting last night.
Another council may now have to provide a site for the proposed plant.
UTV reported this week that 88 per cent of people, including "those who would have had the plant on their doorstep" were in favour of its construction.
In related news, the Environment Agency Pollution Prevention and Control permit to Veolia ES Recovery Nottinghamshire for a proposed incinerator.
The facility will use heat energy from burned waste to generate electricity.
