Officials in China have ordered firms that manufacture potentially toxic products to conduct
environmental analysis into their operations.
The government has taken the action after coming under increasing pressure from eco-friendly groups who are concerned about ongoing damage to
air quality in the country, the Associated Press reports.
Indeed, two sizeable demonstrations by environmental activists have taken place in as many months.
The authorities have also called for local councils to inspect companies in their areas to ensure they are not producing unnecessary pollution.
"Manufacturers of sensitive products such as PX and owners of construction projects must immediately start safety and environmental checks," a spokesperson for the National Development and Reform Commission was quoted by the news provider as saying.
Earlier this month, Chinese state media reported that Beijing would become the subject of a congestion charge similar to the one that exists in London.
This idea was outlined as a way to tackle the emissions from the city's 4.8 million registered vehicles.
