'Bears killed' at Vancouver landfill

Aug 20 2009

What was deemed to be the "largest bear cull in recent history" has taken place at a Canadian landfill site, it was reported.

A total of 12 black bears were shot dead in northern Alberta at the Conklin landfill, where people are said to have regularly fed the animals and which is believed to have inadequate fencing.

A local resident told the Edmonton Journal that the fencing issue had been addressed with the municipality and that it wasn?t the responsibility of Conklin inhabitants to build the fence around the landfill themselves.

"It's totally inhumane," he said.

"We are in their environment, there are no fences, this dump is unmanned, there are no signs to say don't feed the bears," added the man, who wanted to remain anonymous.

Meanwhile, another Canadian landfill site to experience problems recently is the former Cantley landfill, which according to the Ottawa Citizen, breached environmental legislation by damaging local air quality for the past five years.
