The role of hyper-local data in monitoring urban climate resilience

27 May, 2025

As cities face the growing impact of climate change, the need for granular, real-time environmental data has never been more urgent. Urban environments can exhibit extreme variations in climate, air quality, and other environmental parameters across distances as short as 30 metres. This micro-scale variability challenges traditional monitoring systems, which often lack the spatial resolution necessary to support meaningful climate adaptation strategies.

Orbisens, a start-up company based in Berlin, has developed a modular, scalable sensor platform designed to increase measurement density without increasing its complexity. By eliminating cables and moving parts, Orbisens offers a robust, low-maintenance solution that can be easily deployed across various urban settings.

Each sensor node is configurable, enabling operators to monitor specific environmental parameters and interface with existing city systems. This flexibility not only supports a wide range of applications, from public health and safety to infrastructure planning, but also ensures future-proof adaptability for increasingly stringent monitoring criteria. Both the measurement and the communication modules can be changed to suit specific applications now and in the future.

Crucially, the Orbisens system aligns with the shift toward data-driven urban design. By providing hyper-localised environmental insights, it empowers municipalities and users of weather-sensitive infrastructure to make informed, real-time decisions that improve urban resilience, operational efficiency, and environmental quality.
