For the first time, Casella Monitor has supplied an integrated roadside monitoring enclosure system (Romon) encompassing both ambient gas and environmental noise equipment in one system.

With the aid of Casella’s Spanish office, the technology has been field trialled by the Spanish Traffic Police under strict motorway testing conditions, in a bid to control traffic based on pollution levels.

The objective of the Spanish Traffic Police was to acquire roadside ambient pollution monitoring systems on ’s major highways to regulate traffic, using the data to automatically control speed restrictions when contamination reaches trigger levels, as part of a network-wide traffic management system for air pollution control.

Casella is delighted to have been given an opportunity to supply the Spanish Traffic Police market, and managed the difficult task of installing the monitoring system on the central reservation of the A6 motorway, , which could only be accessed at night, aided by a local engineering partner who already supplies roadside cabinets to the Spanish police. The cabin, fully fitted out and compliant to the strict requirements of the Traffic Police, was delivered and installed in just 6 weeks, during the Christmas period.

The Romon consists of:

  A large metal enclosure

Gas analysers for CO and NOx with calibration system

Particulate analyser, BAM 1020 with PM10

  Three sampling pumps

  A CEL environmental Noise Analyser

  Enview data management software

  Air conditioner

  Two modems

Display and Technical Support from Casella , in both development and online help.

Casella expects to pass all the tests required and to become an approved supplier to the Spanish Traffic Police of the ambient control system.

Casella has also applied to become a member of the existing working group that will define and establish the specifications of instruments inside the cabins, and expects to join in the near future.
