A member of the European Parliament (MEP) has called for a formal investigation into air pollution levels in Malta.

Simon Busuttil believes that residents of the Mediterranean archipelago are becoming increasingly concerned by the dust pollution caused by construction plants and building works.

He has submitted a petition bearing 1,200 signatures to the European Parliament, along with a letter to president Jerzy Buzek asking the Petitions Committee to investigate the matter.

"Residents feel that, for far too long, the construction industry has been left free to do as it pleases," Dr Busuttil said.

He also claimed that living close to a construction site that compromises air quality and creates noise pollution can cause people "tension and severe distress", as well as physical health problems.

According to the politician, the European Commission admitted in its response to a previous petition that the air in the Maltese town of Lija breaches EU air quality directives.

Earlier this year, a group of residents in the resort of Sliema voiced concerns over air pollution in the city, claiming that the duel impact of construction work and heavy traffic is creating a health hazard.
