Green Party representative Jenny Jones is harbouring concerns over air quality in London and has called on mayor Boris Johnson to take action.

Ms Jones is particularly concerned about levels of pollution in the English capital because thousands of visitors are expected to line the streets next week for the royal wedding.

Certain areas such as Marylebone Road are already set to surpass the 35-day period each year that regions are allowed to be in breach of EU air monitoring standards.

The Green Party has written to Mr Johnson asking him to declare a smog alert before the big day on April 29th 2011.

"It is important information for people to know if they suffer from a pre-existing respiratory problem," Ms Jones said.

This plea comes in the same week that the European Commission dismissed Mr Johnson's claims that London's air pollution issues were being partially caused by emissions released on the continent.
