Asda is the latest firm to sign up to a scheme aimed at improving
air monitoring accuracy throughout the UK haulage sector.
The supermarket joins 55 other businesses in the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme, which is run by the Freight Transport Association (FTA).
Participants are required to provide regular up-to-date information relating to fuel usage, fleet size and driving activity, which can then be analysed to determine each company's carbon footprint, as well as the extent of the haulage sector's collective output.
FTA chiefs have said the initiative now accounts for more than 50,000 commercial vehicles across Britain.
National transport manager for Asda Chris Hall labelled the project as "vitally important" in bringing about environmental improvements.
"We continue to drive the focus into producing fewer, friendlier and cheaper miles and are delighted to be involved in this scheme," he commented.
The FTA recently called on the UK government to lower fuel duty, as the current high rates are giving European haulage firms a competitive edge over their British rivals.
