The approval for a waste incinerator to be built in Wales has angered residents and campaign groups who think it will compromise the air quality of the area.

Plans to build Viridor Trident Park energy-from-waste plant in Cardiff have been approved by the Environment Agency, despite green groups expressing their anger at the decision.

Cardiff Against The Incinerator's said: "We've presented dozens of documents showing the health risk from the older generation of incinerators and no reliable evidence has been put forward from anyone showing the new generation are any better."

However, Viridor has stated that the technology to be used at the plant has already been in operation in more than 20 sites across the UK.

It stated that it will be monitored by the Environment Agency, adding it will "in no way compromise local air quality standards".

Air quality in Welsh towns have already been under question after it was revealed that pollution levels in Powys increased despite a new traffic system layout implemented earlier this year, reported the Shropshire Star.
