The European commission (EC) has issued several countries with warnings concerning their air quality targets.

Among the nations to receive notices are the UK, Cyprus, Germany, Estonia, Poland, Portugal and Spain.

All of the nations have failed to comply with regulations regarding the emission of PM10 particles, which are deemed to be particularly hazardous to health.

The nations will be allowed sufficient time to address the issue, but if levels are still not sufficient, they may be taken to court.

"Air pollution has serious impacts on health and compliance with the standards must be our utmost priority," stated Stavros Dimas, European environment commissioner.

Earlier this month, a study conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission in France found that Europe is less foggy than it was in the middle of the last century.
