The impact York's taxis have on the city's
air quality could be revealed if an analysis into how much pollution the vehicles produce goes ahead.
Later this week, a City of York Council taxi licensing review task group will decide whether to produce a study into the emission levels of cabs in the area, according to the York Press.
A report by scrutiny officers which will go before the meeting on Thursday (January 20th 2011) stated that
air quality is a problem in all cities around the UK.
It added: "It is recognised that while everybody needs to play their part, those who contribute more to the problem, such as buses, taxis and vans, should be expected to do more to provide the solution."
As well as looking at the pollution the cars create, it will discuss whether some of the vehicles can be replaced with greener ones and if the city has enough ranks.
The findings could improve pollution levels in the city, as the local authority has been named an
Air Quality Management Area for its high levels of nitrogen dioxide.
