The new PFAS sampling line

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are synthetic chemicals introduced in the 1940s, known for their resistance to water, oil and heat. These substances are mobile, persistent and toxic. They do not decompose in the environment, making them very dangerous for both the environment and human health.

In recent years, the environmental persistence and potential health impacts of PFAS have raised significant concerns. Mega System Srl is committed to providing innovative solutions to manage PFAS risks and ensure a safer environment. The new PFAS sampling line designed by Mega System Srl, compliant with OTM-45, enables effective monitoring of PFAS in stack emissions.

OTM-45 (Other Test Method 45) concerns measurement of selected per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances from stationary sources. This method determines the concentration in mass per unit gas volume sampled of specific PFAS compounds.
The sampling is carried out in isokinetic mode, ensuring that the gas velocity inside the sampling probe is equal to that of the flow in the stack.

Mega System Srl offers a complete sampling line for PFAS monitoring. This includes the X1 Heated Probe, which heats the filter to prevent condensation of substances in the gas sample; a specialized Glassware Kit that ensures a proper seal using only frosted ball or conical joints, eliminating the need for plastic gaskets and offering greater flexibility; the Apis Plus, an automatic isokinetic sampler that measures speed and flow rate; the Artik XP, an efficient cooling system that maintains a constant, controlled temperature for various accessories; and a Silica Gel Absorber.

Mega System Srl offers a high-quality glassware kit specifically designed for PFAS sampling in compliance with OTM-45. The kit is engineered for precision and reliability to ensure optimal sampling results. It includes a condenser for initial cooling with hose adapters for water recirculation, two 80cc resin holders with cooling jackets and hose adapters, and a collector for initial condensation. Also included are ‘U’ joints, three impingers with straight tubes, one Greenburg Smith impinger with a plate, and a final condensation collector. The kit provides connection fittings for the filter holder, a pump connection outlet fitting, and a modified glass filter holder with a PEEK insert to eliminate contamination risks. Additionally, the glass tube is modified with a ground cone connection to avoid the use of seals. Clamps are also provided for securely fixing all glassware components.
