In terms of environmental policy, 2016 - the 60th anniversary of the first clean air acts following the Great London Smog - looks set to be marked by the reports from the World Health Organisation of 7 million advanced deaths globally each year from air pollution and the conclusion that it now exacts a heavier toll than malaria and HIV combined.
Many will conclude that this justifies a higher profile and stronger action on the issue, and will therefore welcome the decision of the International Union of Air Pollution Prevention Associations and Clean Air Asia to bring the World Clean Air Congress and the Better Air Quality Conference together in a landmark event intended to promote a higher profile and more vigorous action on the issue.
Because of the complementary interests and memberships of the two organisations, the meeting promises to bring together a diverse audience of policy makers, regulators, and scientists, as well as environmental technology and service providers, for whom it will provide a timely opportunity to highlight the contribution that will have to come from them if the current level of health and environmental damage from air pollution is to be significantly reduced.
More information and contact details for the conference, which will be held in Busan, Korea, from 29 August to 2 September, can be obtained from the website (www.cleanairforcities.org), which includes, or will shortly include, details of sponsorship and exhibition opportunities.
