At this year’s Air Quality and Emissions (AQE) conference in Telford, a number of awards were given out for excellence in various aspects of air monitoring. To learn a little more about their products, partnerships and why they come to AQE, EnvirotechOnline took a walk around the exhibition floor to talk to some of the nominees.

We asked Daniel Calabrese, a Manager at Swissgas, for some details on PermaCal, which was nominated for AQE’s Most Innovative Instrument, Product, or Digital Solution award.

“So, PermaCal is our permeation calibration system. The way it works is simple. A small tube is filled with a pure gas in both a liquid and gas phase. Then, a small amount of gas permeates through and the system dilutes this gas to reach a ppb or low-ppb level of different gases that you cannot find in two gas cylinders, for example. It’s designed for the calibration of gas analysers.”

The PermaCal was developed in collaboration with METAS (Switzerland’s Federal Institute of Metrology), paying particular attention to the compliance of all the physical parameters, of mass-flow controllers, sonic nozzles, and temperature sensors, with international standards. Indeed, as a Swiss firm, we were interested to find out why Daniel thought it was worth Swissgas’ while to make the journey to AQE 2022.

“Well, we have new representatives for Swissgas in the United Kingdom that we wanted to visit, and they were attending AQE. We thought it was a great opportunity to show our face at an event with such wide-ranging attendance from across Europe’s air monitoring industry.”

In 2024, AQE will return bigger and better, graduating to the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham. For information on exhibiting at AQE 2024, click here.
