The Environment Agency is set to discuss proposals to build a new nuclear power station, in order to make sure standards of air quality and waste protection are met.

Today (August 4th), the environmental organisation will meet with energy company EDF to talk through the plans for the plant, which is to be built at Hinkley Point in Somerset.

Brian Payne, nuclear new build project manager for the Agency, said: "As the leading environmental regulator in England and Wales it is our job to ensure that any new nuclear power station will meet high standards of environmental protection and waste management."

He added that the Agency has a "vital role to play" to help maintain air quality in the area and protect the environment.

It will also ensure that the new nuclear power station meets safety, security and waste management standards set by the Environment Agency.

Last month, the group took a food packaging company to court after it breached pollution regulations by letting wastewater pour into the nearby river.

Bakkavor Foods was found guilty and fined £8,000.
