There needs to be greater incentives for manufacturers to develop more environmentally-friendly vehicles in order to improve air quality in the country.

This is the view of Kenneth Richter, biofuels campaigner for Friends of the Earth, who said the "industry is dragging its feet" with regard to enhancing the technology of green cars.

He noted the growing urgency to ensure vehicles on the road release fewer toxins and emphasised the importance of improving the transport sector in order to help this.

"All of the research we're seeing shows that in order to avoid dangerous climate change we urgently need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Mr Richter said.

The Automotive Council is also concerned with the development of the green car industry, having released a low-carbon roadmap earlier this week.

This provides manufacturers of commercial vehicles and construction tools with a long-term strategy to produce more environmentally-friendly equipment in an attempt to improve air monitoring results in the UK.
