A scaffolding firm has been fined £95,000 after breaching waste management regulations.

The Environment Agency took ADIS Scaffolding to court last week after it was found to be treating and keeping commercial waste without an appropriate licence.

Agency officer Dave Brown said that the Derbyshire firm was illegally depositing waste, which could cause a reduction in air quality in the area and threaten the environment.

"The law exists to protect people and the environment from the consequences of such actions. As this court case demonstrates, we are not prepared to tolerate this sort of activity," he commented.

A routine Environment Agency inspection of the site in January 2008 led to the formal investigation, which found that waste had been spread across the land.

The firm was thought to have saved £26,000 by depositing it in this matter.

Last month, a compositing site in Shareshill near Wolverhampton was fined £92,000 after failing to respond to a number of notices from the Agency over the air pollution produced from its waste area.
