Could there be Melamine in my Water?
May 12 2010
The tragic contamination of milk in 2008 has raised worldwide awareness of the hazards of melamine. As a component of many industrial products, including the production of laminates, adhesives, and resins, melamine is an important industrial chemical. In addition, it has been reported to be a metabolite of the pesticide cyromazine. With such widespread use, the possibility exists that this compound could contaminate water supplies. As the events in China demonstrated, the health effects of melamine can be quite profound, especially in infants, and monitoring for this chemical in drinking water can increase the security and health of the general population.
Providing fast, sensitive results, Waters Corporation’s revolutionary ACQUITY UPLC technology and Oasis solid-phase extraction products have been used to monitor melamine levels in drinking water. With a UPLC run time of less than 2 minutes and detection limit as low as 0.4 ng/L, this method has been demonstrated to be robust and practical for laboratory implementation.
As a world leader in separation science, Waters Corporation works with governments, research organizations and industrial partners across the globe to resolve new and emerging environmental concerns. Employing cutting-edge technologies and techniques, Waters has solutions for many of the challenges which are in the news today, including Melamine, BPA, PFCs, and Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products.
