At ILM's Water, Wastewater and Environmental Monitoring (WWEM) event, George Heywood of Ovarro, Ronnie Bains of Seeq, Darren Steele of IT Vizion, and Sam Greene of Southern Water  spoke on the growing importance of data management for flow monitoring in the water sector from a variety of perspectives. After their talks, the speakers fielded questions from the audience and the moderator, Oliver Grievson, on topics as varied as the possibility of moving towards 1-minute frequency and how to combine the knowledge of specialists with automated data handling. Topics include:

  • Why do we need to validate flow data?
  • What can go wrong with flow data?
  • Types of validation for time series flow data
  • Validating for outliers, near-constant values, discretisation and step-changes in calibration
  • What about invalid summary data?
  • Infilling missing or invalid flow data
  • Setting initial percentile thresholds
  • Opportunities for advanced analytics in the water sector
  • Understanding the life-cycle of enterprise data
  • Accelerating the digital transformation
  • Accessing a variety of disparate data stores
  • Replacing missing data and cleansing erratic data
  • Preparing training data for models
  • Applying advanced analytics to cleansed data sets
  • Why is flow compliance so poorly understood in the British water industry?
  • Can the water sector cope with 1-minute frequency?
  • Is there an automation for double-checking monitor error in cases of suspected spills which haven't shown?
  • Where are the main pain-points in mass data management for water flow monitoring?
